Director's Notes from the program: The Cove has been an amazing experience from the get go. Rather than tell you what the plays mean or what they are about (sorry folks, that’s your job to work out now) I have decided to write a short treatise about generosity. Generosity of time, spirit and commitment have been the hallmark of this project from all who have joined our little army. The degree of positive energy that has met every step up this steep incline has been a welcome relief and a potent reminder of why I make theatre: a desire to collaborate with others to slowly uncover a series of worlds so that we may make more sense of our own realities. There has been a great abundance and a deep pool of talent and passion directed at this season and I am very grateful for it. Thank you has been said many times, as it should be, as there has not yet been a word invented to describe my gratitude and admiration for everyone who has worked on this season. And so thank you to: Daniel for his faith, trust and incomparable work, Peta for the opportunity and all her lessons, Kat, Meebs and Branchy for the design dream team, Lok and Geoff for sound reasons and Rosiola for her laughter, hard work and patience. To the actors: Harli, Danielle, Jan, Matthew, Bruce and Majid I am in awe of your talent and humanity and I am a better director now because of you. Thanks also to Beth King, Deryk McAlpin and Aaron Lee for their support and to my family who deserve a medal for patience and unswerving love. I welcome you to The Cove and hope you have a pleasant stay in our world. And leave you with a quote from Albert Camus via Daniel Keene: “There’s beauty and there are the humiliated. Whatever difficulties the enterprise may present, I should like never to be unfaithful either to the second or the first.” Matt ScholtenArtistic Director, If Theatre
